I am positive about dementia
I really enjoyed the meetings I had with my subject for this project. She is funny and insightful about what it is like living with dementia, her candour has helped me create an interesting collection of verbatim text for my latest piece for 'In Their Own Words'. Using her words has allowed me to create a type of language for the piece that is accessible and gets to the heart of the matter. She tries to inspire other people living with dementia to stay positive on her Facebook page and through her public speaking and I have done my best to reflect her up beat attitude in my choice of text. There are parts of the piece however that make me feel sad, not for my subject but more for myself as I am confronted with my own feelings of loss and fears of mortality. I see it as my job to dig deep into the subject matter, but it is often hard to face the things I uncover. What I will take away most from my experience of working with my subject for this piece is a resolve to get the most out of life whatever happens and stay positive, just like her.
